HERITAGE RALLY, February 25, 2012 – Richmond, Virginia

To everyone interested in Advancing the Colors in the Capital of the Confederacy on February 25th, 2012, who is not a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans or United Daughters of the Confederacy, OR those who are but do not have a uniform or Hoop dress to march in official formation, OR whose Chapter/Camp/organization is not planning on participating… - Come on up and Join the Virginia Flaggers! We have a place in the parade line and welcome you…and your flag!

Meet us at the DMV parking lot on Broad Street between 10:00 and 10:30. Parade steps off at 11:00 and ends at the RE Lee Statue, where there will be a Heritage Rally from 12:00 - 1:30.

Mass Flagging of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

The Virginia Flaggers will be holding a mass flagging of the VMFA all day, and invite all parade and rally participants to spend some time with us on the sidewalk surrounding the museum. Join us before and/or after the parade and rally as we begin our 24th week of protesting the discriminatory and illegal actions of the VMFA. We will be out on the Boulevard from 8:00 a.m. to dusk.

Twenty years after Gen. Robert E. Lee rode into Appomattox and surrendered his tattered army, ending the War Between the States, a memorial chapel was built in Richmond in memory of the 260,000 Confederate soldiers who died during the conflict. The Pelham Chapel – Confederate War Memorial is designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S., and has been granted the status of Confederate Monument by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The organ in the chapel was donated by a group of Union veterans from Lynn, Mass. One of the contributors to the soldiers' home that surrounded the chapel was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. And a Union private from Massachusetts donated his annual pension to support the home.

Confederate flags had flown over the grounds since the opening of the Old Soldiers Home in 1885. Those flags did not trouble the Union soldiers who donated the organ to the chapel; nor did they trouble Ulysses S. Grant. They were placed there by Confederate Veterans, to memorialize the Confederate dead, and honor the living.

Fast forward 150 years…on the eve of the Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the War Between the States, June 1st, 2010, Confederate Battle Flags were forcibly removed from the Confederate War Memorial by a restriction in the lease renewal, at the insistence of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

This is in direct violation of Virginia law, which clearly states: “it shall be unlawful for the authorities of the locality, or any other person or persons, to disturb or interfere with any monuments or memorials so erected, or to prevent its citizens from taking proper measures and exercising proper means for the protection, preservation and care of same. For purposes of this section, "disturb or interfere with" includes removal of, damaging or defacing monuments or memorials, or, in the case of the War Between the States, the placement of Union markings or monuments on previously designated Confederate memorials or the placement of Confederate markings or monuments on previously designated Union memorials.” (§ 15.2-1812)

As citizens of Virginia and descendants of Confederate soldiers who gallantly answered Virginia’s call to defend her, we demand that the VMFA remove these blatantly prejudicial restrictions and allow the Confederate Battle Flags to once again fly on the Confederate War Memorial.

Freezing cold temps, Ice, sleet, and even snow... did not hamper the efforts of the Va Flaggers to forward the colors and protest the anti-Confederate, discriminatory actions of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts! 10 Flaggers made their way to the Boulevard in the Capital of the Confederacy!

It was, BY FAR, the busiest day at the museum that we have EVER seen. Crowds came and went ALL DAY and most of them got an EYEFUL of Confederate flags. Conversations were GREAT, with many positive results. So many flyers were given away that we had only a handful left at the end of the day...and we came with 100!

An terrific day on the Boulevard, and an amazing group of Va Flaggers who braved the icy elements to stand for our ancestors and their flags!

On Saturday evening, January 28, 2012 at the Annual Lee/ Jackson dinner celebration , under the Command of the Honorable Ron Jones, hosted by the Longstreet Zolliciffer Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans in Knoxville, Tennessee, Terry Lee Edgerton would successfully debut his Historical March Across Dixie Pictorial Documentary Book, as Mrs. Brooks who depicted Mrs. Anna Jackson, the wife of the Honorable General Thomas Stonewall Jackson would bring the house down with her rendition. The Table of Brotherhood was well prepared on this evening, and a good time was had by all.

Terry Lee and I look very much forward to the Lee/ Jackson event in Greenville, Tennessee on Saturday night, February 4, 2011, the Sons of Confederate Veterans Black History program in Merbane, N.C. on Tuesday February 14, 2012, the medal ceremony for Candice Hardwick in Latta, South Carolina on Monday at Latta High School, and at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday & Wednesday, February 21 & 22 , 2012.

Our hope is that we will garner the support from all as we began preparations for the 10 year anniversary of the Historic March Across Dixie, and a planned visit to Robert E. Lee High School in Midland, Texas in hopes of correcting a tremendous wrong as our heritage and the Flag of Lee and Jackson is once again under attack by those who hate all things Southern. Terry Lee's book certainly depicts a different tale than that told by those who want to use Black folks as their weapon of choice against our Southern Heritage, and most importantly the Southern Cross. This book should be used by all who want the knock out tool against the lies and political correctness of the day .

Flagging Report...Flagging the VMFA - Week 19!

Week 19 of Flagging the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts began with an incredible day on the Boulevard.

We had a total of 18 Flaggers out in the beautiful late January weather and were able to position Flaggers at every entrance and key position around the museum.

Foot and auto traffic was very heavy and supporters FAR outnumbered our opposition! Many people pulled over in their cars to offer support and encouragement. So many people asked for additional flyers to take to friends that we actually RAN OUT!

My favorite conversation was with two elderly ladies who pulled over right in front of the main entrance. They told us that they had lived in the neighborhood all of their lives and used to visit the old soldiers on their way home from school. They were shocked to learn what the VMFA had done, took a handful of flyers, and promised to distribute them to friends and neighbors and call the VMFA to let them know how they feel.

Many, many, more good conversations were held, changing hearts and minds and giving the public an education on our flags and our Heritage. We understand that the Museum's phone lines were flooded with phone calls that afternoon, as well.

In addition, a bill has been introduced to the Virginia General Assembly that will designate the Pelham Chapel as an official State War Memorial, and includes language to replace the flags. We are seeing huge dividends from our efforts and I cannot say enough about the over 150 different folks who have joined us in the efforts to restore the Confederate Battle Flags to the Pelham Chapel.

Our next flagging will be this Wednesday, February 1st, from 3:00 pm to dusk. Join us on the Boulevard! If you are unable to attend, please make a phone call to the VMFA during those hours. Call (804)340-1500, press 2, then 1...hold on...someone will answer! Ask them to return the Battle Flags to the Pelham Chapel.

I have been asked frequently when we are going to be done with the flagging and my answer has not changed in 19 weeks...WHEN THE FLAGS GO BACK UP!!

Brisk winds whipped Confederate flags and banners held by members of the Virginia Flaggers gathered Friday afternoon at Hopkins Green. The announced purpose of the assembly was to call for the defeat of Lexington Mayor Mimi Elrod in the November elections. Many flaggers carried bumper stickers with a Confederate battle flag reading “Boot Elrod” to emphasize their point.

Lawrence Martin had traveled from Charlotte for the event. An Army veteran who had been among the first advisers sent to South Vietnam in the early sixties, Martin said he had served under the United States flag for eight years. He counted three battlefield surgeons among his ancestors who served the Confederacy. “I served my country for many years, but this is my flag,” Martin said.

In a prepared statement, the flaggers specified their organization is not affiliated with the Sons of Confederate Veterans or United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Flagging Lexington

Friday, January 13th, the Virginia Flaggers will be observing the official Lee-Jackson holiday by Flagging Lexington. We ask all Flaggers to take to the streets and sidewalks of Lexington in protest of the Flag Ban passed by Lexington City Council on September 1st, 2011. We have a suggested route to follow, slightly altered from the original proposed parade route, which now covers 2.5 miles, and passes by the homes and businesses of many of those who dishonored Lee, Jackson, and our ancestors with their prejudicial ban. We hope that many of you will follow the route in small groups, at your leisure, and as you are able on the morning/afternoon of January 13th.

Flagging the Veterans Day parade in Knoxville this year.

We were respectful to the veterans and the veterans were respectful toward us. Most would agree that we should be allowed to march in the parade with flags, but those in charge of Legion Post 2 in Knoxville have banned the Confederate flag. They claim its because they will not allow any banner but the US flag in the parade, but all the other organizations have their banners.

Patriot Flaggers do not want cheers:

Our patriots that put themselves in the trenches do not want cheers from the sidelines, they want and need those people in the trenches with them.... Then we can all cheer together. Four or five people ain't gonna put a skeer on anyone. It's numbers "those people" fear." In mass we at least have a chance.

Too many think defending our heritage is something nice to debate amongst ourselves. Well that ain't gonna get anything done in the movement, the nose must be put to the grindstone once and awhile. Keep talking without action and watch the memory of our heroes, heritage, flags and honour fall into oblivion. We better start joining in and help each other before it's too late!

In my old age I have become hard nose but, I will speak my mind and expect same from others. We just ain't doing our fighting as we can and should!

I will stand up to "those people" with any patriot that will stand with me... As long as Our Lord allows me.... Will you stand with someone??

We had City, county and highway patrol cars one after another circled the block the whole time we were there. One, I think the chief of police?? sat in the window of Georgia Power watching us.

Mr. Mark Williams, "Georgia Power" was present in defense of Georgia Power Plant Wansley's actions concerning Yellow Dirt Baptist Cemetery.

In all fairness, Mark, was cordial but. He claimed Georgia Power Plant Wansley did the right thing by the Web brothers and that's all they would do. When I ask if an apologia was forth coming, he said no. I ask him as a man could he apologize to me, a Veteran, for the inaction of Georgia Power not doing the right thing.... His answer was no.

We could care less about the Web & Georgia Power property issue.... It's the law being enforced we now want as it appears they do not want to reason.

The time for protesting Georgia Power should now be over. Southern Legal Resource Center, The SCV and all our many heritage groups need to pursue legal action it this matter.

The bottom line is that the graves of American Veterans are sacred hallowed ground made such by their service to their country, and the placing of the flags are memorials to that service and honoring of their bravery and sacrifice for the rest of us. Both the graves, and the flags thereon are fully protected by full faith and force of law.

It's the law. We must pressure the legal system State and Federal to see the law is enforced!

Ain't we and our Southern heroes & flags been kicked around enough?!!

Confederate Veterans ARE United States Veterans under the eyes of US LAW:

The Administrator shall pay to each person who served in the military or naval forces of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War a monthly pension in the same amounts and subject to the same conditions as would have been applicable to such person under the laws in effect on December 31, 1957, if his service in such forces had been service in the military or naval forces of the United States
U.S. Code Title 38 – Veterans’ Benefits, Part II – General Benefits, Chapter 15 – Pension for Non-Service-Connected Disability or Death or for Service, Subchapter I – General, § 1501. Definitions: (3) The term “Civil War veteran” includes a person who served in the military or naval forces of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and the term “active military or naval service” includes active service in those forces
Confederate Flags ARE protected under Georgia Law:
GEORGIA CODE 50-3-1(4) It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, corporation, or other entity acting without authority to mutilate, deface, defile, abuse contemptuously, relocate, remove, conceal, or obscure any privately owned monument, plaque, marker, or memorial which is dedicated to, honors, or recounts the military service of any past or present military personnel of this state, the United States of America or the several states thereof, or the Confederate States of America or the several states thereof. Any person or entity who suffers injury or damages as a result of a violation of this paragraph may bring an action individually or in a representative capacity against the person or persons committing such violations to seek injunctive relief and to recover general and exemplary damages sustained as a result of such person or persons unlawful actions.
50-3-9. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to mutilate, deface, defile, or abuse contemptuously the flag of the United States, the flag, coat of arms, or emblem of the State of Georgia, or the flag or emblem of the Confederate States of America by any act whatever.
50-3-10. Nothing in this article shall be construed to prevent the use of the flag of the United States or any flag, standard, color, shield, ensign, or other insignia of the State of Georgia or of the Confederate States of America for decorative or patriotic purposes, either inside or outside of any residence, store, place of business, public building, or school building.
50-3-11. Any person, firm, or corporation who violates any provision of Code Section 50-3-8 or 50-3-9 shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

"I speak for that which has no voice. I relay the message of Honor, Dignity, Respect, and Heritage to those who never knew, to those who have forgotten, and to attempt to reach those who refuse to hear.

I travel many miles at my own expense, for which there is no reimbursement. My weapons are the 1956 Georgia Flag, Battle Flag of the Confederacy, and Truth. My enemies are liberals, politicians, NAACP, SCLC, GABEO, SPLC, Black Caucus, media, scalawags, and those who worship ignorance, historical revisionism and Political Correctness.

The former Governor has called me an Extremist. The former Speaker of the House has called me a Jackass. The learned scribes in the papers have called me a Neo-Confederate Peckerwood. By a popular radio talking head I have been called a Flaggot. I have read in the media that I do not exist, and that I am a racist bigot. I wear those names as badges of honor.

I have been hit with a rock. I have had to dodge a bottle thrown at me. I have been flipped off. I have been cursed. I have been called KKK and racist. I have been confronted. I have been threatened with arrest numerous times. I have been investigated by the GBI and I have had my civil rights trampled on almost every event I attend. But for all that, I get thousands of smiles, waves, and thumbs-up.

Jews have persecuted me. Christians have barred me from attending their 10 Commandments rally. Members of my own SCV camp have harassed and ignored my efforts. I have been called a Klansman at two jobs – one previous and my current one - and have been released from 2 other jobs for my beliefs and activities.

I do what I do not for fame or glory (although I have appeared in print and on TV) but for the silent majority. I speak for the mute to the timid majority against the loud heritage-hating minority. My aim is to supply an unexpected education, while following the teachings of my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ and leadership of my Confederate Forebears.

I was born and raised in Virginia. I claim that state as my home, and as a son of Virginia, would come to her aid if ever there was a need, but I reside in Georgia, in the county where my father was born – the same county where 3 of my Confederate ancestors are from as well. Ironically, one of my ancestors fought in Virginia near my place of birth, in Cobb’s Legion infantry, during the Peninsula Campaign. At times I feel I am pulling double duty, representing Georgia and Virginia. I do it to represent the soldiers from 150 years ago, to represent Southerners today, and to protect my children for tomorrow. I have even traveled the 650 miles each way to Flag a hotel in Williamsburg who covered some Confederate artwork to appease some DC black judges.

When I think that my ancestors marched hundreds of miles barefoot, without proper food or adequate supplies, only to then form lines and march into cannon and musket fire by overwhelming odds and against superior numbers and better equipment – I only pray that my small effort is enough “Thanks” for what they sacrificed for me.

The things I have mentioned are factual, and at times have been tough. I willingly accept the challenges and risks. I take pride in taking a stand for the Cause. And for this Cause, I call others to flock to the banner of our ancestors, but most will not. Most find it more comforting to let others go into battle in their stead rather than miss a Football game or a dog washing. Some are “Keyboard Commandos” and write a mean letter, but have no guts to stand with a Flag against tyranny. Some are not even registered to vote. I call to them, but I shall never see them, for they lack their ancestors’ convictions, and refuse to stand up for Honor."

Week 6 – Midweek Flagging – Wednesday 11-9-11 1:00pm - 5:00 pm

Beautiful day in the Capital of the Confederacy for flagging on the Boulevard! Va Flaggers Susan Hathaway, Grayson Jennings, Tripp Lewis, Fred Merridew , and Darryl Stearns were joined by a surprise flagger from Culpeper: Capt. S.B. Dunn, of the 14th VA Cavalry, Co H, - Rockbridge Dragoons – who brought orders from his commander to stand with us and see to our safety.

We held two positions today…with one group flagging directly in front of the Executive offices and original entrance, and another taking position at the main entrance. The pedestrian traffic was slow at first, but picked up as the evening approached. We had many good conversations, explaining why we were out and what the VMFA had done. As usual, most people were unaware of the situation and many promised to call the VMFA and let them know they believe the flags should go back up. We gave out approx. 30 flyers, and, once again, Confederate flags were seen on the Boulevard by hundreds of pedestrians and passers by!

This week has seen a sharp increase in pressure and publicity. Monday, the Times-Dispatch published our editorial, which has gotten the attention of many people throughout the area. 6 weeks of flagging has many people stopping to see what is going on and why we are out there so often, and certainly has let the VMFA know that we are not going away!

We need to keep up the pressure – from ALL sides! Join us Saturday…we will be flagging from 11-3…. Make phone calls to the VMFA: (804) 340-1400… Tell them you want to talk to someone about getting the Confederate flags put back on the Pelham Chapel… Write the director of the VMFA, the Governor, and the Mayor of Richmond… Write an editorial to your local paper…and SPREAD THE WORD…share this album, email your SCV or UDC friends, talk about it at meetings. Momentum is on our side RIGHT NOW and we need to strike while the iron is HOT!

Today's Flagging 11/8/11 Georgia!!

Today's Flagging began at approx 2:17pm on the Lowell Road gate - Carroll County side.

I arrived first and the lay of the land was very simple, a wide 2 lane road with plenty of parking alongside of the road and excellent weather.

Cars could only enter and exit in one direction, as Lowell Road dead ends 100 yards from the gate , so it was a standard fish in a barrel type scenario

Insider info said this gate was the most used by employees, and shift workers begin leaving at 2:30pm.

I began by setting up 2 flag displays that covered an additional 300 yards, Then I set up shop directly across from the gate with my 6X9 Battleflag on a 12 foot pole. I wore my Confederate Corporals uniform but had no weapons, just haversack and canteen.

Within 5 minutes of my arrival, I spoke with 2 people who pulled over and asked what was going on. I just started by asking them about their knowledge of Yellow Dirt, and both nodded and pointed back towards the big chimney and said 'is it about the flags?' I said yessir.

By 2:35, James and Pam Tolbert pulled up to join me. This was their first ever Flagging, so I set them up with a pole each, Miss Pam had brought a flag to use, and I loaned James my 4X4 ANVCBF I gave them a few tips on what to do , what to expect and how to respond. It would turn out for them the best 1st Flagging I have ever saw.

I had 2 more encounters with folks stopping and asking what was going on, and I said the same thing as before, but these people were not aware of the situation inside their place of work, but they left with a whole new outlook, and were very supportive of our efforts.

Just before 3pm, Russ Massa of the Heard Citizen newsmedia appeared. Miss Pam yelled to him "youre one of us!" and he stated NO he was a reporter. I told Miss Pam he probably wouldn't hold a flag with us, but would take our picture of us with a flag.

As he began interviewing us, a Carroll County Deputy pulled up. I thought I had the drill down, I just knew why he was there and I began my canned responses on right of ways and nothing sinister going on, but it turns out that he was just patroling the area and thought a few folks sporting flags on the side of the road looked unusual, so he just stopped to check us out.

The reporter even asked the Deputy a few questions.

Passersby are about 95% positive/friendly. Miss Pam makes sure we are aware of the ones who dont acknowledge her cheery waves and big warm smile. She later admits she really enjoyed doing this, James confesses that Flagging was easy.

Finally the interviews had been made, the Sheriffs deputy departs and it is just us 4 Flaggers to face the sporadic release of Plant Wansley workers. For a few hours Ga Power security had a truck park down near a treeline inside the gate to watch us. Later inside sources inform us that the chief of security Tammy Lovvorn and another person were glued to TV monitors tuned to "The Flagger Show" but they never came out to see us.

Word also was given that shortly after 3ish, their switchboard lit up like a Christrmas Tree light show. Perhaps folks were curious as to our presence? Wonder what was said...

Pictures were taken, stories swapped, and many a person waved, thumbs upped us,

some either yelled 'Yahoo' or 'The South is gonna rise again", and more than a few were spotted snapping camera phone pix of us.

While Jasper is quite a ways off, Steve relayed to us a man in San Diego California said he was flying a CBF in support there for our actions today. Bi-Costal Flagging - so it turned out to be a Multistate Flagging afterall!

Special thanks go out today for Steven Monk and his San Diego Amigo for the Long Distance dedication, and to our new up and coming star - Mrs Susan Hathaway in Virginia, who is the Flagger tech support who posts instantly for Flaggers everywhere to see what info I send her (when she is not out Flagging herself in the Old Dominion) Also thanks to Russ Massa of the Heard Citizen for keeping the story hot, and to Pam and James Tolbert for being new Flagger recruits!

Flagging Week 5 10/28/2011

Despite cold temperatures, rain, and even sleet, yesterday was a great day in the Capital of the Confederacy. 15 folks from as far away as Georgia, North Carolina, and points all over Virginia gathered to line the Boulevard in front of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts with Confederate flags. From 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, we talked with pedestrians, VMFA employees, reporters and let anyone within earshot know what the VMFA has done and that we are not going away until the flags are returned to the Chapel.

Reaction was positive for the most part, with more conversations held and literature distributed than in the first 4 weeks combined.

During the day, Billy and I made visits to the Executive Offices and I have secured an appointment to sit down with VMFA officials on Monday, October 31 to discuss the situation. Late yesterday afternoon, many of us received a form letter from the director, giving their excuses about why the flags were removed. If you wrote an email, letter, or called the VMFA, THANK YOU...and please keep the calls and letters coming.

Special shout out to all of the Va Flaggers who joined us yesterday... including Tar Heels Jamie Funkhouser and Lori Woollen Dodson, who brought snacks to share, Tripp Lewis for generously providing pizza for all participants, and Billy Bearden for traveling all the way from Georgia to join us and give leadership. I met and now count among my friends some terrific men from the Mechanized Cavalry and SCV units from all over Virginia, and enjoyed a great day with friends...old and new!

This is just the beginning of what could be a lengthy campaign. More volunteers were recruited yesterday, and those who attended for the first time are eager to return. We will step up our presence at the VMFA, with Va Flaggers present throughout the week and weekends, to make sure they understand we are serious in defending the honor and memory of our ancestors and our flags. Please stay tuned for more opportunities to join us, remember our efforts in your prayers, and keep up the calls and letters! ~ Susan

Flagging the VMFA - Week 4

The ‎4th consecutive Saturday of Flagging the VMFA brought a slightly cooler, but still beautiful Saturday in Richmond. A surprise visit from C.C. Lesters, all the way from Ft. Lauderdale, and Tripp Lewis and his beautiful family, brought our largest crowd of Flaggers to date.

Reaction was mostly positive today. Most people we chat with are unaware of the situation with the Battle Flags at the Pelham Chapel. We had a chance to discuss it with several folks, and distributed literature that details the situation and why we are on the streets with Confederate flags. Several people commented that they had seen us out here every Saturday and finally came out to ask us what was going on. It may be that they figured out we are not going away!

This Friday, October 28th, we are planning to stage an all-day flagging, hoping for enough flaggers to cover the block surrounding the VMFA from one end to the other. Ya'll come!

Flagging the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts - Week 3

VERY windy in Richmond, Virginia Saturday, October 15th, but the sun was shining on Va Flaggers Grayson Jennings, Tripp Lewis and Susan Hathaway as we headed out for another day of flagging the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
From 11:00 am- 3:00 pm, we walked the sidewalk surrounding the Chapel and Museum and spoke with a good number of people.

The highlight was a couple who were going to the museum until they heard that the folks there had forced the SCV to remove the battle flags from the Chapel. They were furious and turned around and went to visit the Chapel, instead.

One employee from the museum stopped and talked with us. He took a flyer in with him, so we got at least one inside the building.

Everyone we talked to today was supportive and most had no idea what had been happening. One young man took our information and wants to join us next week.

This very nice lady talked to us for a good while, asked a lot of questions and agreed that the flag should not come down.

All in all, a very successful afternoon in the Capital of the Confederacy, with flags flapping in the breeze for hundreds to see, and good discussions and literature distribution to help raise awareness about the Virginia Museum of Fine Art's attack on the honor and memory of our Confederate ancestors.

Flagging Marble Hill, Mo. 10/14/11

Clint Lacy ""The Missourah Bushwhacker"" came from Marble Hill, Mo. Thursday, October 13, 2011 to protest the message vandals left on the Civil War Confederate shrine Tuesday morning in the courtyard of the Common Pleas Courthouse in Cape Girardeau. The graffiti has been covered with a tarp since Tuesday. Lacy said, "I thought since these guys couldn't stand up for themselves, I thought I would come stand up for them for a while." Lacy has traveled as far as Memphis, Tenn. to stand up for confederate soldiers since "they are dead and can't stand up for themselves."

Flagging the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. 10-1-11

Twenty years after Gen. Robert E. Lee rode into Appomattox and surrendered his tattered army, ending the War Between the States, a memorial chapel was built in Richmond in memory of the 260,000 Confederate soldiers who died during the conflict.. The Pelham Chapel – Confederate War Memorial is designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S., and has been granted the status of Confederate Monument by the Commonwealth of Virginia. The organ in the chapel was donated by a group of Union veterans from Lynn, Mass. One of the contributors to the soldiers' home that surrounded the chapel was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. And a Union private from Massachusetts donated his annual pension to support the home.

A pair of Confederate flags had flown over the Confederate Memorial Chapel in Richmond since 1887. Those two flags did not trouble the Union soldiers who donated the organ to the chapel; nor did they trouble Ulysses S. Grant. They were placed there by Confederate Veterans, to memorialize the Confederate dead, and honor the living. Fast forward 150 years…on the eve of the Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the War Between the States, June 1st, 2010, these two Confederate Battle Flags were forcibly removed from the Memorial by a restriction in the lease renewal, at the insistence of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This is in direct violation of Virginia law, which clearly states: “it shall be unlawful for the authorities of the locality, or any other person or persons, to disturb or interfere with any monuments or memorials so erected, or to prevent its citizens from taking proper measures and exercising proper means for the protection, preservation and care of same. For purposes of this section, "disturb or interfere with" includes removal of, damaging or defacing monuments or memorials, or, in the case of the War Between the States, the placement of Union markings or monuments on previously designated Confederate memorials or the placement of Confederate markings or monuments on previously designated Union memorials.” (§ 15.2-1812) As citizens of Virginia and descendants of Confederate soldiers who gallantly answered Virginia’s call to defend her, we demand that the VMFA remove these blatantly prejudicial restrictions and allow the Confederate Battle Flags to once again fly on the Confederate War Memorial.
